XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Holden COMMODORE VE 2006-2013

The VE Commodore is a heavy, long-wheelbase rear-driver with a live-feeling Zeta platform underneath it, and on a broken sealed stage that mass works against you – the nose pitches, the rear axle skips on mid-corner ruts, and a road-spec damper runs out of stroke long before the driver runs out of commitment. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly that surface: a sealed-stage tarmac rally damper tuned to keep a 1.7-tonne SS or Calais planted when the camber drops away and the tarmac turns to patched asphalt.

This is not a fast-road kit pressed into rally service. The valving and stroke have been developed from XYZ Racing’s tarmac rally programme, where the brief is impact absorption first and platform composure second – the two things a VE on a stage road needs most.

What this coilover does for your 2006-2013 Holden Commodore VE

On a smooth circuit a VE will tolerate a stiff fast-road coilover. On a stage road that same setup pogos over expansion joints and unloads the inside rear under power. The Tarmac Rally damper changes the picture: it soaks the bigger hits without spiking through to the chassis, so the rear LSD keeps biting and the front tyres stay loaded through the apex. You feel it most in the moments where a road coilover gives up – cresting a compression, landing off a kerb, hooking the throttle out of a second-gear hairpin on patchy tarmac.

For a 6.0 L1 or L77 SS the gain is traction off corners. About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally damper is purpose-developed for sealed-stage work, where the road surface is the variable and grip levels swing corner to corner. The construction is tuned to absorb the jolt of large impacts – kerb strikes, sunken drain covers, patched repairs – rather than transmit them through to the body shell. By suppressing that shock loading, the tyre stays in contact with the road for a higher percentage of each rotation, which is where the traction gain comes from on a stage.

All of the valving settings carry over from XYZ Racing’s tarmac rally competition programme, so the baseline is a known-good rally tune rather than a road damper with stiffer springs. The result is a coilover that delivers vehicle stability on surfaces that would have a circuit-spec setup skipping wide, while still allowing the height and damping adjustment a rally car needs between recces and stages.
