XYZ Racing Super Sport Coilovers — Hyundai ELANTRA 1996-2000

The first-generation J2/J3 Elantra arrived as a light, willing front-driver with a soft factory damper tune that ran out of body control long before the chassis ran out of grip. Two decades on, the bushes are tired, the struts are dead, and the surviving cars are owned by people who actually want to drive them. The XYZ Racing Super Sport coilover is built for exactly that owner – someone running a clean HY05 Elantra on UK B-roads with the occasional Cadwell or Mallory weekend in the diary.

Super Sport sits in XYZ Racing’s fast-road-with-track-capability bracket. The 36-way damping adjustment is the headline figure, but the more useful number for a 1996-2000 Elantra is the ride-height range – enough to drop the nose out of its factory 4×4-spec arch gap without killing the geometry.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2000 Hyundai Elantra

On a chassis this light, you feel damper changes immediately. The Super Sport’s monotube damping cleans up the front-end float that defines a stock J2/J3 Elantra over mid-corner bumps, and the 36-way adjustment means you can run the rear stiffer for turn-in on a trackday Sunday, then back it off three or four clicks Monday morning for the commute. Lowering the car tightens the roll centre and gets the wheels filling the arches the way the original Hyundai design studio drawings always suggested they should. Brake dive under hard stops is properly controlled for the first time in the car’s life, which matters more on a 1990s platform with modest pad and disc area than it does on anything modern.

About the Super Sport coilover

Super Sport is XYZ Racing’s bridge between their entry damper and the harder-edged Circuit and Racing kits. The damper body is engineered to remove the discomfort that comes with bump and broken-surface inputs on stiffer aftermarket setups – the brief is genuine dual-purpose, not a track coilover with the rebound wound down. Ride height adjusts independently of spring preload, so corner balancing and stance setting are separate jobs. The 36-way knob controls combined bump and rebound; you turn one dial per damper and the change is repeatable click-to-click. The damper is rated for both weekend competition use and daily driving, which is the use-case the original Hyundai Elantra owner-base in 2026 actually represents.

Fitment for the Hyundai Elantra (1996-2000)

This kit is built specifically to the HY05 first-generation Elantra platform sold from 1996 to 2000. Strut top dimensions, lower mounting points and stroke length are all dimensioned to the original Hyundai suspension geometry – this is not a universal Korean-platform damper sold under a fitment label.
