XYZ Racing Pro Rally Coilovers — BMW 02 SERIES φ45 welding 1966-1977

The BMW 02 Series was rallying gravel and snow stages in period on nothing more than a MacPherson strut front end and a live-axle-light unibody, and that short-wheelbase, low-mass layout is exactly why the platform still turns up on modern rally grids and historic events. A road-going strut mount was never built to survive repeated compression cycles over rutted gravel or a snow-bank landing, which is where this Pro Rally coilover earns its keep.

This is the φ45 welded-mount specification: the top mount is fabricated for a 45mm strut body and fixed into the shell rather than bolted through the factory perch, so fitment means cutting and welding the mounting point into the chassis rather than a direct swap. It’s built for cars already committed to a full rally build, not a weekend fast-road 2002.

What this coilover does for your 1966-1977 Bmw 02 Series

Once welded in, the 45mm strut body and larger-diameter shaft give the damper the surface area to control repeated high-speed compression without the fade a road-spec unit suffers after a handful of hard hits. On loose surfaces that means the front axle keeps tracking through braking into a corner instead of skating over the top of ruts, and the rear stays settled enough under power to put the 02’s light kerb weight down cleanly out of a hairpin. The welded top mount also removes the flex a bolt-in perch introduces under lateral load, so the strut geometry stays consistent lap after stage rather than working loose as the mounting points fatigue.

About the Pro Rally coilover

XYZ Racing splits rally-specification suspension into two build classes: an amateur-grade unit that installs directly onto the factory chassis mounting points, and this professional-grade unit, which requires the body to be modified and the strut top welded directly into the shell. That distinction exists because competition-level rally use puts loads through the mounting point that a bolt-in perch was never designed to carry indefinitely. The φ45 welded top plate spreads those loads into the surrounding structure instead of concentrating them at a single bolt pattern, which is the same logic teams use when prepping a shell for full stage work. It’s a build reserved for cars going into serious rally or off-road competition, where the extra fabrication step at fitting pays for itself in mounting-point durability once the car is actually on a stage.

Fitment for the Bmw 02 Series (1966-1977)

Built for the BMW 02 Series, chassis code BM81, covering the full production run from 1966 to 1977. Because this is the welded φ45 top mount, fitting requires the receiving shell to be modified to accept the strut before the coilover is installed – factor that into your build schedule rather than treating it as a bolt-in part.

Rally gravel/snow suspensions are very professional suspensions and they are designed into two types:

1. Be installed directly with the original chassis. (Amateur type)
2. Be installed after modifying the car body. (Professional type)
