XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E39 M5 1998-2003

The E39 M5 was the last super-saloon BMW built before electronics started doing the thinking for the driver, and its 1,795kg kerb weight, 50:50 distribution and naturally-aspirated S62 V8 mean it punishes a soft set-up. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is the right answer for a 400bhp E39 M5 that sees occasional track work but still has to cover the M6 on Monday morning without rattling fillings loose.

This is the spec for owners who already understand that the standard M-tuned dampers and self-levelling rear were never going to keep a 1.8-tonne saloon flat through Druids – and who are not willing to give up daily usability to fix it. Top Sport lifts spring rate and damping over the road-going XYZ tunes, but stays inside the envelope of "drive it to the circuit, drive it home".

What this coilover does for your 1998-2003 Bmw 5 Series E39 M5

The S62 wants to sit hard on the front axle under trail-braking and the standard rear gets light – more so when the self-levelling rams are tired, which by now they all are. Stiffer Top Sport damping settles the nose under load and gives the rear enough composure that the diff can put 400bhp down without the chassis squirming. Ride height comes down to a sensible E39 stance – the front-arch gap that has been bothering you since you bought the car finally closes. Bump compliance is the part owners are most surprised by; with damping rates 30-50% above street tune, the coilover absorbs broken tarmac and motorway expansion joints without the crashing you would expect from a track-leaning set-up. Steering response sharpens because the front strut tops are no longer working against worn factory rubber, and turn-in stops feeling vague at the straight-ahead.

About the Top Sport coilover

Top Sport is the spec XYZ Racing builds for cars that earn their keep on circuit but still live on the road in between. Spring rates run roughly 2kg/mm above XYZ’s street tunes and damping is wound up 30-50% to match – enough to suppress body movement on a hot lap, not so much that the car becomes uncomfortable on the way home. The valving carries over from XYZ’s race programme, so the damper controls the spring properly through the full stroke rather than just stiffening up and skipping over mid-corner bumps. The result is a coilover that holds the tyre in contact with the road when the surface goes broken, which is the actual mechanism behind every lap-time gain Top Sport delivers – traction, not just stiffness. Construction is the same monotube, height-adjustable platform XYZ uses across its track-capable range, with damping settings carried straight from XYZ’s circuit work.

Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E39 M5 (1998-2003)

Direct replacement for the E39 M5 chassis built between 1998 and 2003 with the S62 V8. The kit replaces the front strut and rear damper/spring assemblies including the factory self-levelling system – one of the reasons high-mileage E39 M5 owners go down this route is to delete the EHC rams before they fail again.
